More leaks from Meta!

It seems like the leading XR firm cannot catch a break leading up to its Connect 2023 online showcase event. Following leaks last month, once again Meta faced leaks with information regarding the specifications of the Quest 3 MR headset falling into the laps of audiences this week.

In an UnboundXR store listing, the site revealed many core details behind the Meta Quest 3. The specifications are as expected. However, the leaked specifications may not reflect the upcoming device, and the leaks cannot be confirmed until Meta Connect 2023.

Of the leaked information, UnboundXR revealed the following details:

    • 2064 x 2208 pixel resolution per eye

    • LCD display

    • 129Hz refresh rate

    • Pancake lens

    • Snapdragin XR2 Gen2 chipset

    • 2-3 hours of battery life

    • 97 horizontal and 93 vertical fields of view

    • IPD adjust options and eye relief support

    • A weight of 509g

    • Users will have a storage space choice of 128GB or 512GB

    • USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi connectivity

    • Inside-out tracking and cameras

    • Depth Sensors

    • Full RGB outward-facing cameras for MR colour passthrough

A number of these details are already common knowledge – such as the battery life and chipset – but features such as a larger storage space could interest customers looking to install multiple applications.

Moreover, the leak revealed the prices of the device and some of its accessories. The Meta Quest 3 512GB model will cost roughly  €699, an elite strap with battery pack will cost €149.99, a carrying case will cost €79.99, a silicone face interface will cost €49.99, and finally, a charging dock will cost €149.99.

Quest 3 Unboxing Leaks

In late August, a video emerged on X showcasing the Quest 3 device. The unboxing video shows off the upcoming MR device, its controllers, and packaging.

The video highlighted how the MR headset has a less bulky frame than the Oculus Quest 2. Previously, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted that the Quest 3 device would have a roughly 40 percent thinner form factor than its predecessor thanks to its pancake lenses.

Moreover, the Meta Quest 3 controllers resemble those with the Quest Pro headset. Meta redesigned the Touch Plus controllers from the Quest 2 for ergonomic reasons.

With the redesign, however, Meta is removing controller-based built-in cameras. Meta has said that the Quest 2’s tracking ring design has been abandoned, with tracking being managed by integrated sensors and predictive AI. The controllers also include Tru Touch haptics.

The video also suggests that the Quest 2’s cloth strap and silicone face pad have been preserved for the Quest 3, and Meta has previously said that the product will have a more flexible head strap for ergonomic comfort.

Quest 3 to be Revealed at Connect 2023

Meta is hosting its Connect showcase this month, September 27 – 28, 2023, for users to watch via Facebook and Horizon Worlds.

The Menlo Park-based firm will also host part of the event in person at its HQ, allowing audiences to get hands-on with their immersive portfolio – including the Quest portfolio, Ray-Ban Stories, Avatars, and Horizon Worlds. Meta will reveal more details concerning the event as the date comes closer.

Meta will provide attendees with an in-depth look at upcoming Meta XR products, Horizon Worlds’ metaverse developments, emerging AI innovations, and hands-on opportunities for the company’s forthcoming immersive product portfolio. Additionally, the event will host sessions, allowing attendees to learn from Meta’s community of developers, builders, and creators.

Meta Connect day one will start with a keynote with Mark Zuckerberg and a “Developer State of the Union.” Historically, these sessions hosted ground-breaking news, such as the firm’s rebranding.

Day two will feature developer sessions and product sneak peeks – most likely showing off the upcoming Meta Quest 3 MR device.
